Dishwasher Not Draining or Not Cleaning? Diagnostic Guide From Decatur Techs
Standing water in the bottom, cloudy glasses or gritty plates? Follow the technician's path from filter and drain hose to pump, wash arm and inlet valve.
You open the dishwasher and find an inch of gray water sitting in the bottom, or the dishes come out with a film, grit or dried-on food. These are the two dishwasher complaints we hear most in Decatur, Avondale Estates, Dunwoody and Sandy Springs, and they are related: a dishwasher that cannot drain or fill properly cannot clean. This guide follows the same order our technicians use.
Dishwasher Not Draining
Step 1: The Filter
Nearly every Bosch, Samsung, LG, KitchenAid and Whirlpool dishwasher built in the last decade has a removable cylinder filter in the floor of the tub. Twist it out and rinse it. A filter caked with grease and food is the number one cause of standing water and the cause most homeowners have never seen.
Step 2: The Sump and Impeller
With the filter out, look into the sump. Glass shards, olive pits, fruit stickers and broken toothpicks jam the drain impeller. Remove debris carefully; a jammed impeller can also burn out the drain pump motor if left.
Step 3: Drain Hose, Air Gap and Garbage Disposal
- New disposal? If the dishwasher stopped draining right after a garbage disposal was installed, the knockout plug inside the disposal's dishwasher inlet was never removed. This is a five-minute fix and one of the most common calls we run.
- Air gap: the small chrome cylinder on the sink deck clogs with debris. Pop the cap and clean it.
- Drain hose: look for a kink behind the dishwasher or under the sink, and confirm the hose loops up high under the counter before dropping to the disposal or drain. A hose with no high loop lets sink water siphon back into the tub.
Step 4: Drain Pump
If the filter, sump and hose are clear and the dishwasher hums or stays silent at the drain phase, the drain pump has failed. Error codes Bosch E24 / E25, Samsung 5C / 5E / OC, LG OE and Whirlpool F8 E2 point to a drain fault. Pump replacement is a same-day repair.
Step 5: Check Valve and Control
A stuck check valve lets water flow back after each drain. A failed relay on the control board never energizes the pump. These are the last two items we test, and a meter confirms them quickly.
Dishwasher Runs but Does Not Clean
Water Is Not Getting In
Open the door two minutes into a cycle. The tub should have water just below the heating element or floor. If it is dry, the water inlet valve is clogged or failed, the water supply is off, or the float switch is stuck up. Low water pressure means weak spray and dirty dishes.
Wash Arms and Spray Nozzles
Pull the lower and upper spray arms and hold them to a light. Clogged nozzles stop the arms from spinning and leave dishes in one zone dirty. Hard water in Metro Atlanta plugs nozzles surprisingly fast; a soak in vinegar clears them.
Circulation Pump and Wash Motor
If the tub fills but you hear no strong spray, the wash motor or circulation pump has failed. A humming or grinding sound during the wash phase is the tell.
Water Temperature and Heating Element
Dishwashers need 120°F water to dissolve detergent. Run the hot tap at the sink before starting a cycle. If the dishes never get hot and dry poorly, the heating element or its thermostat has failed; on Bosch models a failed heat pump also throws E09.
Detergent, Rinse Aid and Loading
Pods that do not dissolve, a dispenser door that sticks, an empty rinse aid reservoir and blocked spray paths from oversized pans cause more "not cleaning" complaints than any part failure. We check these before quoting anything.
Cloudy Glasses and White Film
Hard water film wipes off with vinegar; etching does not. Film points to too much detergent or no rinse aid. Etching means the water is too soft or too hot for the detergent dose, and it is permanent.
