Dryer Not Heating? Samsung & Whirlpool Diagnostic Checklist
Dryer tumbles but clothes come out cold and damp? Follow the same checklist our Metro Atlanta technicians use to find the failed part, from thermal fuse to heating element.
A dryer that spins for an hour and hands you a basket of cold, damp towels is the single most common laundry complaint we hear across Decatur, Stone Mountain, Lithonia and East Atlanta. The drum turns, the timer counts down, but there is no heat. On Samsung and Whirlpool dryers the fix is almost always one of a handful of parts, and this checklist walks through them in the order a technician would.
First: Rule Out the Two Free Fixes
1. Check the vent. A dryer vent packed with lint traps heat and trips the safety thermostat, so the dryer runs cool to protect itself. Disconnect the vent hose at the wall and run a load. If the dryer suddenly heats, your vent is the problem, and a clogged vent is also a fire hazard. Have it cleaned before you reconnect.
2. Check the breaker. Electric dryers use a double-pole 30-amp breaker. If one leg trips, the motor still runs on 120V but the heating element gets nothing. Flip the breaker fully off, then back on.
If neither restores heat, one of the components below has failed.
Electric Dryers (Samsung DV Series, Whirlpool, Maytag, Kenmore)
Thermal Fuse
A one-time safety fuse on the blower housing that blows when the dryer overheats, usually because of a restricted vent. When it blows, most Whirlpool dryers still tumble with no heat, and many Samsung models stop running altogether.
- How we test it: unplug the dryer, remove the rear or lower panel, and check the fuse for continuity with a multimeter. No continuity means it has blown.
- Important: a blown thermal fuse is a symptom. We always find and fix the airflow problem that caused it, or the new fuse will blow within weeks.
Heating Element
The coil that actually produces heat. Elements break at a weak point after years of expansion and contraction. On Samsung dryers the element sits inside a housing at the rear; on Whirlpool it is in a cage at the bottom or rear.
- Signs: dryer tumbles normally, no heat at all, no burning smell, thermal fuse tests fine.
- How we test it: continuity across the element terminals. An open reading means a broken coil.
High-Limit Thermostat and Cycling Thermostat
These regulate drum temperature. A failed high-limit thermostat cuts power to the element permanently. A failed cycling thermostat can cause either no heat or overheating.
Heater Relay on the Control Board
On newer Samsung and Whirlpool models a relay on the main control board switches the element. When the relay fails the element never energizes even though it tests fine. This is the fault homeowners most often miss, because every part looks good on the bench.
Gas Dryers
Igniter
The glow bar that lights the gas. Igniters crack and lose continuity with age. Watch through the front lower panel: if the igniter never glows, it or the flame sensor has failed.
Flame Sensor and Gas Valve Coils
If the igniter glows bright orange but no flame appears, the flame sensor or the gas valve solenoid coils are failing. Coils typically fail hot, so the dryer heats for the first few minutes, then goes cold for the rest of the cycle. That pattern is the giveaway.
Samsung-Specific Tips
- Samsung dryers that stop mid-cycle with a tS, tE or HE error code are reporting a thermistor or heating fault. Do not keep restarting; the code tells us where to look.
- Samsung's Sensor Dry cycles will cut heat early if the moisture sensor bars behind the lint filter are coated with fabric softener residue. Wipe them with rubbing alcohol.
Whirlpool-Specific Tips
- Whirlpool and Maytag dryers with a "Check Vent" or AF (airflow) code are telling you the vent is restricted. Clean it before replacing parts.
- Many Whirlpool models share the same thermal fuse, thermostat and element kit, so we stock a universal kit on every truck.
