Gas Stove Burner Won't Light or Keeps Clicking? Diagnostic Guide
Burner clicks but no flame, lights then goes out, or burns yellow? A safety-first troubleshooting guide from Decatur technicians who service gas ranges daily.
Click-click-click, but no flame. Or one burner lights while the others stay cold. Or a flame that sputters yellow and leaves soot on your pots. Gas cooktop problems are common in Decatur's older homes and in newer kitchens alike, and most of them have a simple cause. This guide walks through them in order, with the safety rules our technicians follow on every gas call.
Safety First
- If you smell gas and no burner is on, do not operate any switches. Turn off the range's gas shutoff if you can reach it safely, open windows, leave the house and call your gas utility or 911 from outside.
- Never try to relight a burner repeatedly while gas is flowing; let the area clear for a minute first.
- Any repair that involves the gas valve, manifold, regulator or the oven safety valve should be done by a licensed technician who leak-tests the connection afterward.
Burner Clicks but Will Not Light
Wet or Dirty Igniter
The white ceramic igniter next to the burner head must be dry and clean to spark properly. Boil-overs, spilled water from cleaning and grease build-up are the number one cause. Let it dry completely, then clean the metal tip gently with a soft brush. Do not use a metal pin or sandpaper on the ceramic.
Misaligned Burner Cap
If the burner cap is off-center after cleaning, gas and spark do not meet. Lift the cap, seat it squarely on the burner base, and try again. This fixes a surprising share of "will not light" calls.
Clogged Burner Ports
Food debris and grease block the small holes around the burner head, so gas cannot reach the igniter. Soak the burner head in warm soapy water, clear each port with a wooden toothpick and dry it fully before reinstalling.
Failed Igniter or Spark Module
If one burner never sparks while the others do, its igniter electrode has cracked or the wire has come loose. If no burners spark, the spark module or the spark switch behind the control knob has failed. A burner that sparks constantly even when the knob is off usually has a spark switch shorted by moisture.
Burner Sparks but There Is No Gas
A clean igniter that sparks strongly with no flame means gas is not reaching that burner. Causes include a closed shutoff valve, a failed burner valve behind the knob, a clogged orifice, or a regulator problem if all burners are weak. These are technician repairs; do not disassemble gas valves yourself.
Burner Lights, Then Goes Out
Modern sealed-burner cooktops with flame sensing or a re-ignition feature will shut a burner down if the sensing electrode does not see a flame. Clean the igniter, check the cap alignment and make sure the flame is not being blown out by a draft or an overhead fan on high. If it still cuts out, the spark module's flame-sense circuit has failed.
Yellow, Orange or Sooty Flames
A healthy gas flame is blue with small, steady cones. Yellow tips, a lazy orange flame or soot on cookware mean incomplete combustion.
- Natural gas range running on LP, or vice versa: the orifices and regulator were never converted. This is a common problem in homes that switched fuel sources or bought a used range.
- Blocked air shutter or ports: debris changes the air-to-gas mix.
- Humidifier or aerosol use nearby can temporarily tint flames orange.
Oven Burner Problems

Gas Line, Regulator and Installation Issues
Ranges installed with a kinked flex connector, an undersized supply line or a regulator set for the wrong fuel produce weak flames on every burner.
