Fridge Not Cooling but Lights On? Diagnostic Guide From Decatur Techs
Lights work, compressor may hum, but the fridge is warm. Here is how to tell a simple fan or defrost failure from a sealed-system problem before you call.

The refrigerator light comes on, the display works, maybe you can even hear it running, but the milk is warm and the freezer is soft. This is the most urgent appliance call we take in Decatur, Avondale Estates and Tucker, because every hour of delay costs groceries. Here is exactly how our technicians narrow the cause, and what you can safely check yourself while you wait.
Step 1: Freezer Cold, Fridge Warm? Or Both Warm?
This single observation splits the diagnosis in half.
- Freezer is cold, fresh-food section is warm: the sealed system is working. The problem is almost always airflow or defrost, which are fast, affordable repairs.
- Both sections are warm: the compressor is not running, or it is running but not moving refrigerant. Move to Step 3.
Step 2: Freezer Cold / Fridge Warm — Airflow and Defrost Faults
Evaporator Fan Motor
The evaporator fan pushes cold air from the freezer coil into the fresh-food section. When it fails you will hear the compressor run but no fan hum, and the freezer may frost heavily while the fridge warms.
Check: open the freezer and press the door switch or wait a moment. You should hear a fan running behind the rear panel. Silence, or a loud grinding noise, means the fan motor or its blade is the fault.
Frozen Evaporator Coil (Defrost System Failure)
If the defrost heater, defrost thermostat or control board fails, frost builds on the coil until it becomes a block of ice that no air can pass through.
Check: look at the rear freezer panel. Heavy frost or ice is the tell. A 24-hour manual defrost restores cooling temporarily, but the failed defrost component will freeze it again within a week or two.
Damper Control
On many Samsung, LG and Whirlpool models a motorized damper opens and closes to meter cold air into the fridge. A damper stuck closed leaves the fridge warm while the freezer stays perfectly cold.
Step 3: Both Sections Warm — Compressor Side Faults
Condenser Fan and Dirty Condenser Coils
The condenser fan pulls air across the coils under or behind the fridge. Pet hair and dust choke the coils, the compressor overheats and shuts down on its thermal overload, and cooling stops until it cools off, then repeats.
Check: pull the lower kick plate and look at the coils. If you cannot see metal through the lint, they need cleaning. Listen for the condenser fan while the compressor runs.
Start Relay and Overload
The compressor needs a start relay to kick on. A failed relay produces a distinctive click every few minutes with no compressor hum. Shake the relay after unplugging the fridge: a rattle means it has burned out. This is a fast, inexpensive part.
Compressor or Sealed System
If the compressor hums and runs continuously but the coils never get cold, the compressor has lost capacity or the sealed system has a leak or restriction. Diagnosing and repairing sealed systems requires recovering and recharging refrigerant, which by federal law must be done by an EPA 608 certified technician. This is also the point where we give you an honest repair-versus-replace recommendation based on the refrigerator's age and brand.
Main Control Board and Thermistors
A failed thermistor tells the board the cabinet is already cold, so it never calls for cooling. Board and thermistor faults are common on newer Samsung and LG inverter models and show up as error codes on the display.
What to Do Right Now
1. Move perishables to a cooler with ice; food above 40°F for more than four hours should be discarded.
2. Clean the condenser coils and confirm both fans run.
3. Do not repeatedly unplug and re-plug the fridge; wait at least five minutes between attempts so the compressor does not lock up.
4. Note any error codes and the model number from the sticker inside the fresh-food door.
When to Call
Call the same day if the freezer is also warm, if you hear clicking without a compressor hum, or if a manual defrost fixed the problem only temporarily. Our technicians arrive with evaporator and condenser fans, start relays, defrost heaters, thermistors and control boards for Samsung, LG, GE, Whirlpool and Sub-Zero, and we are EPA 608 certified for sealed-system work when it is the right call.
