Washer Won't Drain or Spin? Step-by-Step Diagnostic Guide
Washer stuck full of water or refusing to spin? Learn how Decatur technicians isolate drain pump, lid switch, belt and control faults on Samsung, LG, Whirlpool and Maytag washers.
You open the lid or door at the end of the cycle and find a drum full of gray water and a heavy, soaking load. Or the washer drains fine but the clothes come out dripping because it never spun. Safety First: Get the Water Out
Before any inspection, drain the tub. On front-load washers there is a small access door at the bottom front with a drain hose or filter cap. Put down towels and a shallow pan, open the cap slowly and let it drain. On top-loaders, use a bucket to bail, or lower the drain hose from the standpipe into a bucket on the floor and let gravity work.
Unplug the washer before touching anything inside the cabinet.

Clogged Drain Pump Filter (Front-Loaders)
On Samsung, LG, Whirlpool and Maytag front-loaders the pump filter behind that lower access door catches coins, hair ties, socks and bra wires. A clogged filter is the number one cause of a washer that will not drain, and it is a five-minute fix.
- Open the access door, drain the residual water, unscrew the filter and clear it.
- Spin the pump impeller behind the filter with a finger. It should turn freely with slight resistance.
Kinked or Clogged Drain Hose
Pull the washer forward and check the drain hose for kinks behind the machine and for a clog where it meets the standpipe. A drain hose pushed too far down a standpipe can also siphon or air-lock.
Failed Drain Pump
If the filter is clear and the hose is open but you hear a hum with no water movement, or no sound at all, the drain pump motor has failed. Many Samsung and LG pumps make a loud grinding or rattling noise for weeks before they quit. Replacement is a one-visit repair.
Lid Switch or Door Lock
Top-loaders will not drain or spin if the lid switch does not register the lid as closed. Front-loaders will not spin if the door lock assembly fails. Listen for the click of the lock engaging at the start of a cycle. Error codes such as Samsung dE / dL, LG dE, and Whirlpool F5 E2 point to the lock.
Washer Drains but Won't Spin
Unbalanced Load
Modern washers detect an off-balance drum and refuse to reach full spin speed to protect the tub. One heavy comforter or a single pair of jeans is a common trigger. Redistribute the load and rerun a Rinse and Spin cycle. If the washer spins normally, the fault was the load, not the machine.
Worn Drive Belt (Belt-Drive Models)
On Whirlpool, Maytag and many top-load washers a rubber belt connects the motor to the drum. A stretched or broken belt lets the motor run while the drum stays still, often with a burning rubber smell.
Motor Coupler or Clutch (Older Top-Loaders)
Whirlpool and Kenmore direct-drive washers use a plastic motor coupler that shears when the tub is overloaded. The washer fills and drains but will not agitate or spin. The part is inexpensive and the repair is quick.
Suspension Rods and Shock Absorbers
Worn suspension lets the drum bang and triggers the off-balance sensor repeatedly, so the washer stops before spinning. If your washer walks across the floor or shakes violently, suspension is the cause.
Motor, Hall Sensor or Control Board
On direct-drive Samsung and LG washers, a failed hall sensor or stator lets the drum spin unevenly or not at all, usually with an LE or 3E error code. These are precise diagnoses that require testing with a meter; guessing at a control board is an expensive mistake.
